Willy Muir My highlight this month was attending spring yearling

Andrew Russo sales, Waimaire & Otengi, Matapouri’s 50th sale and
Philip Shepherd Mahuta. Suzanne also enjoyed attending the spring
bull sales at Riverton and Ardo Herefords. It was great
to catch up with breeders, and moving the cows and
calves with Paul and Philip Shepherd whilst looking
out to the Bay of Islands was extremely special.

It has also been interesting talking to the dairy buyers. Some
clearly just want a ‘Hereford’ bull with low birth weight, whilst
others are specifically chasing figures for the future – including
good 400DW and carcass quality. It confirms that it’s important
NZ Herefords market the benefits that ‘solid data’ add to their
breeding programme giving them a solution to the inevitable
reduction of bobby calves.
We had hoped to include a list of the bulls successfully
selected for the Dairy Beef Progeny trail and the Beef Progeny
trial, but unfortunately this edition had to go to print before
the names were released. Anna Boyd (Genetics Operations
Specialist, B+L) did pass on that “the quality of the Hereford bulls

discount can be given to each member, acknowledging your loyal

sent shortly.
www.herefordprime.co.nz Lastly, when you read this, Gray & Robyn Pannett and I will
be in France attending the European Conference followed by a
visit to the UK Hereford Society. They are eager to reciprocate
the hospitality we gave them in 2020, and invited us to attend
the Autumn breed show, sale and dinner. More on this in the
