A NEW VENUE AND NEW FACES meant a lot of changes for of Hereford supporters at Future Beef; Niamh Barnett and Lisa

The change of venue from its usual home at Manfeild and
new members on its committee proved a winning combination
for the Future Beef B+LNZ Hoof and Hook competition.
First launched in 2006, Future Beef New Zealand (FBNZ)
runs its Hoof and Hook competition every year to encourage
and promote youth involvement and interest in the beef industry.
Designed for youth from any walk of life, FBNZ’s goal is to
inspire and support emerging farmers and leaders for the next
generation by educating them, developing skills and passing on
knowledge.
The competition involves learning modules, team-building
activities, stock judging, handlers’ classes, and an on-the-hook
competition for steers, kindly donated by farmers from around
the country. Schools also put forward teams to participate in
the event.
It was fantastic to see 77 competitors and 46 steers descend
on the Masterton A & P Showgrounds. Once again, Hereford
breeders and supporters dominated the event.
Special congratulations to Chrissina and Bruce Donald’s
Ngakouka Hereford Stud, who had an excellent weekend. Their
daughters, Georgina, Molly and Hannah, not only broke in their
own steers but also extras for other competitors. With their
entry (36) they won the Gallagher Lightweight Crossbred Steer
Overall, while their other entry (38) became the overall Allflex
Reserve Champion Heavyweight Steer.
