Willy Muir I love the Autumn months as they create a great
Laurie Paterson (HP) opportunity to catch up with members, and this year
Andrew Russo the added bonus of being with the youth and past
Philip Shepherd youth, during the Youth Development weekend.
Becs Paterson (NZ Herefords youth coordinator) and her
helpful team (Sam Tipping, Marc Murphy, Lisa Bonenkamp,
Amy Hoogenboon, Will Gibson, & Ross Paterson) were brilliant
organisers and presenters but what impressed me the most is
the way they are also becoming fantastic mentors to the next
generation. Some of them are continuing the tradition of their
own mentors, and mentored the older ones in the pub on the
Saturday night! The weekend reflected the very best of the
Hereford family; the ability to view and discuss great cattle; the
voluntary hard work by a team of organisers and host breeders;
and the generosity of so many. You can read more about the
event on page 10 in Ella McWilliam’s report.
The AGM and National Sale were also great opportunities
for the breed to get together. It was heartening for the council
to get the backing for the new Helmsman National Sale format
and great to see so many people turn up on the day to watch it

I we will miss Colin’s weekly chats on Monday morning, when he
checked in to see how the office was running. He was always
extremely easy to contact and instant in his response, which was
enabled by being at the computer rather than in the yards but
www.herefords.co.nz equally it is in his nature. As Gray said in his speech at the AGM,
we are all extremely grateful to the amount of work Colin did for
www.herefordprime.co.nz the association, especially heading the response to the COVID
outbreak after the WHC and undoubtedly, he made our life in the
office easier. However, we are all blessed with a cohesive council
which has a succession plan, we are equally looking forward to
working for Gray and his team.
www.facebook.com/nzherefords The council more than ever before has been set some strategic
challenges over the last couple of months and are having to
identify what is the best direction to take for NZ Herefords,
with several options on offer. One being involved in a trial with
Igenity, which would utilise NZ Herefords data for a commercial
cross breed evaluation. While this sounds ‘frightening’, there
are potential benefits, mainly being that PBB are running the
