Ella McWilliam | NZ Youth Event

The Hereford Youth Development Forum was an
awesome event. There were 17 of us learning about
Herefords and the beef industry near Christchurch in
Rangiora. Our schedule started with a tour through
Xcell breeding services where we learned about semen
collection from bulls as well as rams. I really enjoyed
learning about EBVs and how to use the Hereford website,
later that evening at Woodburn Herefords.
I have never been to the South Island before, so I found
the farm tour at Grassmere very beneficial. It’s interesting
to seeing cattle run in different farming environments.
I think the farm tours were a very important part of the NZ Hereford Youth Development Forum.
weekend for us young Hereford breeders as we need
to experience different farms and different breeding
programmes. Most importantly, this weekend was a
great opportunity to catch up with old friends and make
new friends that are interested in the same thing, cattle,
farming, and Herefords!! I loved the end of the days after
the long days of learning going out for dinner, having a
great fun night out.
There was more to the weekend than that though. There
was also stock judging where we had to speak in front of
everyone and tell them why we placed the bulls. Thank
you to the Burrows and Stokes families for providing cattle
to judge. I am very proud of everyone that gave it their
best from those who are experienced to those who have Ella McWilliam - Champion Judge award.
never done anything like this before.
Thank you to all the families that provided us learning
opportunities and hospitality, especially Rob and Mary
Ann Burrows, and to Rebecca Patterson for organising
everything. I learnt so many great things from the
weekend and encourage anyone to do it no matter your
skill because that is what the weekend was about, TO
LEARN.
