           Martin Taylor

           July 1949 – August 2020

ew Zealand lost a strong Hereford supporter in
2020 with the passing of Martin Taylor, Glenbrae
                      Polled Hereford Stud, Hawke’s Bay.
Martin grew up on a family farm in Takapau
Nin Central Hawke’s Bay and started his career as
a building apprentice, then a solo butcher, before working as
a shepherd. He returned to the family farm, initially buying
half and leasing the other half. After deciding to go into stud
cattle he started to sell off the commercial cattle and replaced
those with stud cows and heifers bought from stud dispersals,
buying approximately 185 females over three years. In 1980
Martin purchased the second half of the family farm. In 1992 34 ANNUAL SALE

Martin and his wife Mary, keen to expand their business,
bought a bare land block in Dannevirke and in 1994 started (on farm at TANGITERORIA, NORTHLAND)

daughter Emma, who took charge of publicity, and son 25 2yr Bulls & 5 In Calf Heifers
Daniel, who tragically died in an accident in February 2019.
Martin was a passionate farmer with an outstanding eye
for quality stud genetics – the Glenbrae herd is one of the Visitors always welcome
most maternal Hereford herds in the country and Martin was
known for his breeding philosophy phrase of ‘butts, guts and
nuts’. He was a previous director of Hereford Prime and was
treasurer for much of his time with the brand. Martin took a
lot of pride in his stockmanship, which was evident with the
strong sale results recorded both at the national Hereford sale
and their annual on-farm sale. Highlights included the top HERD SIRES NOW IN USE
