MONYMUSK – TE ANAU
The faces of Monymusk – Chris and Jayne Douglas, together HOTELS
with Henry, Ally, Ruby, Eva, Jack, Amanda, Ben, Jemma and STUDS
Marli – say hello from Te Anau.
The Monymusk stud was established in 1964 in Amberley. 15 14 13
In 1984 with the purchase of Chris and Jayne’s first farm, they 12
moved south with 17 cows. In 2019, they tagged 250 calves. 11
Steady herd building has occurred over the years with the Queenstown
purchase of Braxton cows and semen making up the base of 1 Conference Venue
where the stud is today. 2 8 10
Monymusk has held its own sale since 1988 and the past 16 3 6 7 9
have been on the farm. Chris says there have been numerous 4 5
highlights along the way, the most notable being selling
Monymusk Discovery L34 tor $34,000 at the 1994 National
Sale and Monymusk Gallant 110089 for an on-farm Hereford
record of $72,000 in 2013, which still stands. “Gallant has
bred amazingly well and features now in a lot of New Zealand
bloodlines.” Monymusk itself bought a Gallant grandson from
the Merrylea stud for $25,000 in 2019.
About 36 bulls are sold at the stud’s annual sale at the end
of May. “We believe the type of bull we’re selling is ideally suited
to the current market; moderate framed with a ton of thickness
and depth. Our carcass EBVs are outstanding, with IMF being
very strong.”
The current senior herd sire, Matariki 140245, is “breeding
the house down”, with more than 20 sons being offered
this year.
WAIAU HEREFORD STUD – WESTERN SOUTHLAND
Waiau Hereford Stud is a 2200ha farm located deep in
Western Southland – a family-run business with four generations
living and working on farm.
It runs 4500 breeding ewes, 180 stud cows, 260 commercial
cows, 450 breeding hinds and 100 velveting stags. “We focus
on breeding a sound animal that will grow and thrive in any
climate and on any terrain, as well as finishing all our stock on
the property,” says Darryl King, who farms with his wife Nicky
and their son Jamie and daughter-in-law Nicole, and daughter
Kate and son-in-law Scott Egerton.
In 2017, Waiau Herefords celebrated its 50th annual bull
sale. It has now moved to a combined sale with three other
breeders, offering a range of breeds. In 2018 an additional bull
sale was added, promoting the white face advantage by offering
yearling commercial bulls.
“We are excited to have this opportunity with the World
Hereford Conference to share our knowledge and passion with
other breeders and breed enthusiasts from New Zealand and
around the world.”
The family sadly lost patriarch Colin in 2019, but Darryl’s
mother Fay still lives on the property. She says Colin was a real
cattleman who loved his animals.
“We love all the contacts we’ve made through the Herefords.
It’s one big family.”
