Braeside has 190 breeding cows, including three Hereford
herds and one Hereford-Angus cross herd.
Several awesome photographs of those cattle appeared in
the 2022 NZ Hereford Youth calendar.
“They’re all taken on my phone. Because Mum’s an artist,
she takes a lot of photos, and has always given me good tips
on how to take good ones, plus I did photography in my last
year at school.”
Leora says her biggest supporter is mum Karin.
“She has always been right behind me. I love it when she
visits from Canterbury as I don’t get to hang with her as much
as I used to.”
The other person Leora thanks is Anna Peddie, who was 2IC
at Leora’s first job.
“She’s taught me so much, not just about work, but about
being a better employee,” Leora explains. Anna’s reference
helped Leora win a Silver Fern Farms scholarship, which in
turn led to her buying some Hereford-cross heifers. “I didn’t
make as much on them as I’d hoped, but I learnt a lot, and I’m
really proud of the finished result with them.”
There’s no doubt Leora loves shepherding, and she loves
her job.
“There are cold miserable days when everything seems to
go wrong – that can be soul destroying. Then there are these
beautiful days when I’m out mustering on my horse and I love
it, even if I am yelling at one of my dogs that’s not listening. I
love my dogs and I love my animals. I’m so lucky. There are a
lot of people who sit in high-rise buildings in the city. I’ve had
enough jobs to know it doesn’t get better than this. I’m living Two of Leora’s photos made the 2022 NZ Hereford Youth
