I enjoyed the whole event and was proud to be there
representing New Zealand as one of only three Kiwi
competitors. I really appreciate Becs Paterson and my
Mum and Dad for helping me to organise the trip over. A
huge thanks also goes to Kierin and Nikki Martin for being
willing to take me into the fold and mentor me and organise
transport and accommodation in Australia. Nikki is the
Herefords Australia Youth Coordinator. This opportunity was
really valuable for me as it gave me the chance to broaden my
networking in the Hereford and wider cattle industry and I
met and made many new friends.
After the Youth Expo, Kierin and Nikki invited me back to Ella and fellow kiwi Lisa Bonenkamp competing at the Herefords
Australia at the end of September to show and prepare cattle Australia National Youth Expo.
at the Melbourne Royal Show. This time I stayed for nine
days, flying into Sydney and then taking a bus to Orange
where I stayed at Kianma in Forbes, NSW for a couple days
before the show. I got to have a better look around Australia
during the eight-hour drive to Melbourne with a truck full of
cattle. The show was amazing! I learned a lot from Kierin and
Nikki and with only three people preparing eight cattle, we
had to work well as a team.
I competed in two Paraders Competitions at the Melbourne
Royal, coming second in the Simmental Youth competition
and winning the Stud Beef Paraders competition.
Attending the Melbourne Show was another opportunity
for me to meet more Australian cattle breeders and expand
my network. I cannot thank the Martins enough for the
opportunities I have had this year learning about Australian
Herefords, cattle breeding and farming in general. Selfie time: Australian youth competitor Tabby Cross takes a
