stud competition; while it used to only be between Jac’s
Herefords and Robin’s Angus, the return of Robin’s daughter
Zarah and her Murray Grey stud might give them a run for their
money. Fingers crossed for our club president that she can
retain the most profitable cattle title at their sale again this year.
We then moved on to Rodney and Joanne Jupp’s Hurstpier
Stud in Tikorangi. While Rodney is still in the herd-building phase
after a wee break from Hereford breeding, he showcased some
exceptional cattle and had an impressive bull calf. Rodney has been
spending some time breaking in this bull calf. All was going well until
he over-brushed him and he responded by giving Rodney a swift
kick in the shins. Watch this space for Rodney and his show bull.
Lucky, he bought all that showing gear from the youth auction in New
Plymouth two years ago and can now put it to good use. I wonder if
it will make national sale led section in a few years, Rodney?
On the way to Nic and Marcus McLeod’s Horizon Stud, my
passengers, Lance and Daniel Smith, finished their rather large
bag of Coronas for the road and subsequently were rather happy
with their day out. In true hospitable fashion, Nic encouraged
everyone to grab a drink, and with beer or wine in hand the
tour completed the viewing of their final herd for that day at the
foot of Mt Taranaki. It was a real treat it wasn’t raining, and Nic
and Marcus put on a lovely BBQ of Hereford Prime steak and
salads, topped off with pudding treats (most likely to sweeten
those of us who were the sober drivers on the way home).
The day was full of excellent banter, learning opportunities,
camaraderie, and delicious food and drink. It was a real pleasure
to host such a day and even more rewarding that we had
several breeders from outside the region spend the day with us.
Thumbs up to council members Phil and Colin for getting out
there and supporting the smaller local clubs.
Thank you to the Taranaki Breeders for hosting the day and
thank you to everyone who came along.
