Mike’s father, Adrian, had always preferred Hereford cattle
and the white face cross so when the late Jan Willis and Heather
Robertson from Hereford Prime approached him more than 25
years ago, the relationship was an organic match.
After living in the Bay of Plenty for the past few years, Mike
has recently moved back to his hometown of Te Awamutu
and purchased a 21ha block of land where he is now finishing
Hereford Prime cattle that will be processed through Magills.
With Magills’ relationship with meat processor Waimarie
Meats, located in the lower North Island, alongside the recent
expansions, Mike hopes to see the Hereford Prime numbers
increase, especially for the beef farmers in the local area. The
goal is to process 25 head a week at Waimaire.
Mike plans to finish 200-plus Hereford cattle annually,
alongside some New Zealand lamb. He also has a small number
of free-range chickens that give him just enough eggs for the
family. As more land adjacent to his property comes up for sale,
he would like to buy this to expand his carrying capacity. He has
already planted more than 40 trees, turned internal drains into Grass-fed Hereford Prime beef in the chiller at the Magills’
ponds, and will build a maimai for duck shooting. Te Awamutu retail store.
Mike’s plans for Magills are to invest further into the
foundations of the business by “digging deeper”, solidifying “Two of the most popular steakhouses in Hamilton, Furnace,
the circular business model to have more control over their and Smith & McKenzie, have both used Hereford Prime
already high-quality product. branded beef on their menu for more than
“I also hope John and Edward will become shareholders in 10 years – a great testament to the flavour
the business too,” says Mike. and quality of the beef.”
The longevity of the business and the quality of the
products has made Magills a preferred supplier for many
local restaurants and cafes in the Waikato region. Many chefs
choose Magills because of the consistency that comes with the
        Hereford Prime grass-fed branded beef.
