MEETING NEW, LIKE-MINDED PEOPLE, having fun all weekend and
learning some valuable lessons at the same time… it was a recipe
for success for the 2018 Future Beef event at Manfeild Stadium.
It is encouraging for the NZ Hereford Association to see so
many young competitors associated with the Hereford breed
at last year’s event, says manager Posy Moody. There were 61
competitors across three ages – juniors (aged 7 to 13), intermediate
(14 to 18) and senior (18 to 25). Future Beef attracts competitors
from Northland all the way down to Invercargill, with the majority
of children coming from different backgrounds, but all with an
eagerness to learn about the beef and wider agriculture industry.
The modules endeavoured to provide a good balance
of educational and practical, so both the younger and older
competitors could get stuck in, says Future Beef NZ coordinator
          Isabelle Crawshaw.
“The 2018 event included a tractor module, irrigation
module, agronomy, animal health, a stock truck, and many ABOVE: Molly Donald, Dannevirke.

expertise with the competitors. Their passion for what they do is
infectious and it leaves everyone feeling really engaged.”
Hereford was the standout breed at the 2018 Beef + Lamb
NZ Future Beef Competition, with more support from breeders
          and competitors than ever before.
Congratulations to the McWilliam family for winning the champion
heavy weight steer judged on the hoof (led by Ella McWilliam), and
Sophie Langtry for winning the champion light weight steer on the
hoof (led by Georgia Moody), with the overall champion steer on the
hoof awarded to the McWilliams, and reserve champion to Langtry.
Hook results were equally rewarding to the Hereford breeders,
with Ngakouka Herefords awarded reserve champion steer on the
hook and also winning overall purebred steer, with the McWilliams
winning overall New Zealand heavy weight purebred steer.
