TOP QUALITY PRODUCE
As well as turning out mighty maternal lines the Hores produce
top quality beef, proof of which is the 2016 Silver Fern Farms
lower South Island Pasture to Plate beef supplier award.
Further evidence of superior beef is the 78% specification
rate on a 2017 kill sheet for 40 R3 steers supplied to Silver
Fern Farms EQ Mastergrade Premium contract, which has
exacting pH, fat colour, meat colour, weight, rib fat, marbling
       and ossification criteria.
“We put about 800 through the EQ contracts each year. We
strive for quality and appreciate being paid and acknowledged
       for it,” Richard says.
Beaumont’s ability as a consistent and quality red meat
producer is reinforced by the nationally recognised performance
of their 37,000 half-bred flock. The family won the Supplier of
the Year award at the 2017 Sheep Industry Awards, after being
nominated by their processing company Silver Fern Farms.
Half-breds were introduced by the Hores on arrival at
Beaumont, replacing the mainly Perendale flock. The continued
crossbreeding of Merino and Romney has produced a true dual
purpose meat and wool income earning flock. About half of the
mid-micron clip is sold under Merino New Zealand contracts.
Terminal lambs are supplied early in the season and the
wintered half-bred lambs progressively offloaded from October.
In 2016 more than 94% of Beaumont lambs supplied met Silver
       Fern Farms specifications.

“WE PUT ABOUT 800 THROUGH THE
EQ CONTRACTS EACH YEAR. WE STRIVE
       FOR QUALITY AND APPRECIATE BEING
       PAID AND ACKNOWLEDGED FOR IT.”

CLOCKWISE, TOP LEFT TO BOTTOM: The Hore family’s ability to
consistently turn out large volumes of high quality beef and lamb
has been recognised with several awards; About 30% of Beaumont
half-bred lambs are supplied during the premium-paying October
to November period; Marydale farm manager Alister Paul has the
job of winter feeding and finishing Beaumont’s young cattle and
lambs. “For every unit load that comes in there’s two out, that’s the
general rule,” he says. The farm, five minutes north of Balclutha and
easily accessible from State Highway 1, is a popular stop off and
showcase farm for overseas clients of Silver Fern Farms; Most of
Beaumont Station is oversown hill and native country. About 120ha
of the hill country is oversown and sprayed each year.
