2005 Royal Show Report

NZ Herefords rose to the occasion at the recent Royal Show held in Hamilton, at Waikato World from 28th – 30th October.  Herefords were out in front with the greatest entry numbers of all the cattle breeds.
Hereford animals exhibited were a credit to their breeders and exhibitors- the quality of the cattle, outstanding - several Hereford exhibits competed successfully in the Allbreeds and Interbreed classes.
Senior Hereford Judge Mr John McKerchar from the Shrimpton Hills Stud, Fairlie was delighted to see strong entry levels in the Hereford classes and praised the efforts of all exhibitors presenting cattle. Mrs Maria Robbie of Otapawa Hereford Stud, Eketahuna ably filled the Associate Judge’s position.
The Rangitoto Stud of Fenton Williams, on the back of a very successful 2005 Beef Expo, again came to the fore with Maddux genetics in the form of the yearling bull Rangitoto Innovation.  Awarded ‘Supreme Champion Hereford’ by Judge McKerchar, the judges remarks included “Innovation is an outstanding yearling bull, his soundness, growth and especially his muscle pattern made him a clear winner in his yearling bull class and a deserved winner of the Supreme Champion Hereford honour. It will be interesting to monitor the progress of these winning genetics through Innovation and his progeny”.
Senior Female honours went to the Craigmore Stud entry of the Henderson family, Craigmore Leonora with her 2005 born calf displaying very feminine characteristics.
Fenton Williams went on to further success in winning all Interbreed and Allbreeds classes, he entered with his yearling bull and heifer – Innovation also went on to take out the Junior Meat and Wool Cup.
Beef Steward at the show; Mr Bruce Orr made the following comments…
” A good show for the breed and well done by the club. An excellent show for Fenton Williams who won every Breed, Interbreed and Allbreed class he entered, with his two animals.  The only title he missed out on was the Senior Meat & Wool Cup and with a yearling, no matter how good the animal is will struggle against a 1200kg bull (and a good one) with six judges.
I thought Hereford Judge John McKerchar did a very good job; was the pick of the judges on the Sunday and was an excellent ambassador for the breed”.
