Flock Management Policy

As this is a dual-purpose flock, both wool and lambs, production is important to us.

Wool – 3600 ewes are all shorn pre lamb (July/August), with cover combs and placed in sheltered paddocks with supplementary feed. As weather permits during winter, the main ewe flock are rotated around saved pasture on a 2 day per break (1 day grass/1 day silage) wintering system. The 2 tooth’s and hoggets have Swedes and silage each day.

Ewe hoggets move onto grass paddocks on the 20th of September, as this is the earliest time of guaranteed grass growth on the property.

There is minimal shepherding, only a daily check being done for cast ewes and miss-mothered lambs. The performance recorded ewes are run separately at this time and all lambs are tagged and recorded at birth.

Lambs are weaned after the New Year, crutched and spread out on saved pasture, they will be moved according to finishing requirements. In the 2000-2001 season …. lambs averaged …. with …. % grading …. All lambs are weighed prior to consignment with Prattley Power Draft system. Lambs from the recorded ewes are weighed at weaning (March and May), eyemuscle scanned in May and wool weighed at August hogget shearing. All information is analysed through SIL – Sheep Improvement Limited.
